Profile: Lionel Hoche, born in 1964 in France, studied from 1976-1983 at the Paris Opera Ballet School. He joined NDT 2 from 1983-1985 and then was with NDT 1 from 1985-1989.
Dance Background: In 1991 he joined Astrakan, Daniel Larrieu’s company in Paris, where he danced until 1991. In 1992 he became Larrieu’s assistant for Attentat Poétique, created for the Paris Opera Ballet. In 1992 Hoche established his own company, MéMé BaNjo, and presented Priére de Tenir la Main Courante at the International Cannes Dance Festival.
Choreography: In 1988, he created his first choreography for NDT 2; U should have left the light on. This was followed by Coming up Roses (1990), Blancs d’y voir (1992), À tire d’aile (1993), X-Press (1999) and for NDT 3, Vagûe à l’ame (1994).
Hoche has been active as a freelance choreographer since 1990. His works have been performed by such companies as NDT, Monte-Carlo Ballet, Batsheva Dance Company, Ballet National de Nancy, Balleto del’ Opera di Roma, Finnish National Ballet and Zürich Ballet.
In addition to his choreographic work, Lionel Hoche has also taken up the study of Art and ever since 1992 he has designed the stage sets for all of his choreographies.
