On the opening night of the UK tour of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo we meet company dancer Carlos! You can see him and the rest of The Trocks across the country from today (15th September!) until the 11th November.
Here Carlos gives us an insight into his own history.
I was born in Cuba, which is the biggest island in the Caribbean Sea, and lived most of my life there. I trained in ballet there at the National Ballet of Cuba and with my mother, who was a leading dancer with the company, Norma Hopuy. I came to the USA in 2009.
On April 11, 2015 Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro shook hands at the Summit of the Americas in Panama. It has been 54 years since the two countries severed their ties in 1961.
Last time I went to Cuba was in 2012 to visit my family, which I miss so much. Next time I go, I would like to bring my husband, Paolo Cervellera. I want to show him where I used to live, where I went to school, introduce him to my childhood friends, and for him to know my roots.
I dream of going to Cuba with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlos and perform in the theatres where I grew up and became a professional ballet dancer.
Now that the relations between United States and Cuba are getting a lot better, this dream can become reality .
