We excitedly announced at the beginning of the year that Dance Consortium’s Co-Chair, Stuart Griffiths has been awarded an OBE on the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

Stuart Griffiths is currently a Co Chair of Dance Consortium and has been involved with the organisation since its formation in 2000.

It was announced last Friday that Stuart is due to leave Birmingham Hippodrome in July this year for an exciting new role at ATG as their Programme Director.

Throughout his career, Stuart has always given dance a high priority in his programming. He created the Swan Dance season at Wycombe Swan featuring some of the first presentations by Matthew Bourne alongside The Royal Ballet, LCDT, Rambert, Mark Morris and NDT 2.

Stuart has been the Chief Executive of Birmingham Hippodrome since 2002 and over the last 12 years dance has grown to become almost a third of Hippodrome’s annual ticket sales. Stuart has introduced many international dance programmes including Bolshoi and Mariinsky Ballet, Mark Morris, NDT, National Ballet of Cuba and Cloudgate to name a few!

He also co-directs the International Dance Festival Birmingham alongside David Massingham of DanceXchange.

Stuart champions dance as the art form best able to create international and cross-cultural links through a shared language that communicates with diverse audiences.  It is his hope that award recognises the Hippodrome as a key part of Birmingham’s wider city cultural offer,  plus  underlines its national and international reach.

We would like to extend our congratulations to Stuart on his new job and his OBE and thank him greatly for all his support of Dance Consortium. We hope he has a wonderful day when he receives his award – we look forward to seeing the pictures!
